David Castillo Foster works in paper, not paint. Nineteenth-century engravings, torn book leaves, found photographs and letterpress scraps, cut apart and put back together into something stranger than any of the sources.
Half the titles come from myth — Icarus As A Boy, Virgo Lilith, Ojo. The other half are numbers he found already printed on the page and kept.
Beige, bone, sepia and a lot of brown, with almost no hot color anywhere in the run. That restraint is why four of these in a 2x2 read as one piece instead of four arguments. Twenty scraps of aged paper in a single collage also means twenty slightly different whites, which is a color-management problem before it's a printing one — dedicated gray inks keep them separate. More on the artist.
